Darkness, Light, Darkness / Tma, světlo, tma (Jan Švankmajer, 1989)

In this surrealist animation from one of Eastern Europe's most iconic animation masters, Jan Švankmajer, a claymation figure confined to a single, empty room, gradually reconstructs itself from dismembered clay body parts in a bizarre attempt to find corporeal coherence.

Eluding straightforward interpretation, Darkness, Light, Darkness perhaps suggests that too much time spent on the experimentation of finding oneself distracts from the brief moment of truly living, as we tumble back into darkness once more.
