Directed by award-winning documentarian Anja Koprivšek, Grand Prize is a joyous celebration of love and chosen family amongst the new generation of Croatian queer youth. The film follows Valentina, a 29-year-old dancer who lives at home with her mother, works at a vintage store to make ends meet and practises her voguing in the shop’s storeroom; and Teo, a young trans man whom Valentina has supported throughout his recent transition. For both of these young people, the drag ballroom scene is their passion, their community, and their lifeline within a society that is still largely inhospitable to LGBTQ+ identity and expression. We follow the pair throughout their various drag ballroom competitions – echoes of Jennie Livingston’s iconic Paris Is Burning (1990) abound here – but are also given access to their homes, their everyday joys and connections, and the vast capacity for love within the network around them. The film tenderly depicts Teo and Valentina’s blossoming romance, as they develop strong feelings for each other and begin to explore what their life together might look like.
